There's so much content out there, and all of it begins with the promise of the premise that TV pilots bring. A pilot is a beginning, a launching point, a birth of something that may never again see the light of day, but may also far outgrow and outlive it's humble beginnings to become a phenomenon, or at least damn good enough to cause people to tune in every week.
This Blog will break down, discuss and explore some great and not so great, pilots in TV history. What better to start than with some recent bests.
This particular writer, reader, viewer has become fairly enamored with the programming put out by the former constant movie marathon known as AMC. In just a few years this basic cable channel has become a powerhouse for compelling, dramatic storytelling. Over the last year or so I've had the pleasure of reading and watching the pilots, and many subsequent episodes of said networks breakout hits: MAD MEN, BREAKING BAD and THE WALKING DEAD (we won't talk about RUBICON, which despite some positive word of mouth, only lasted one season).
Which one I'll start with, I don't know quite yet. But I guarantee it'll be either the best Zombie, Ad Agency or Meth Cooking chemistry teacher, hours of television that you've ever seen or read.
Look out for lift off sometime in the next week.
